Undergraduate team member Sydney Hull received a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) award for the summer of 2019. As part of the award, Sydney will be paid to conduct research full-time with the lab. 2019 Maryland ABA
Claire had the opportunity to present at the 2018 Maryland ABA conference, where she described some of the work conducted in the lab about teacher training and inclusion of behavior analysis into K-12 public school systems (click here for a copy of the presentation).
An additional wonderful aspect of MABA was having the opportunity to reconnect with former students and introduce them to each other. It was a great pleasure to hear about what former lab members are doing these days!
Celebrating our graduating seniors!
The lab is celebrating our graduating seniors, Jordan Miller and Alex Musilli, who successfully completed their capstone poster presentations this evening!
New publication!
Our newest publication is now available in Early View for the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior! Click here to access a read-only version.
Stephens awarded SABA grant!
Catherine Stephens (St. Peter labbie) has been chosen as a recipient of a 2018 SABA Innovative Student Research grant. Catherine's project examines a novel application of resurgence procedures to determine the extent to which resurgence accounts for recurrence of problem solving. Congratulations to Catherine!
More post-graduation success!
We were so excited to see graduate students Apral and Gabrielle start new jobs to make positive changes in the world at the end of fall. We just learned that former undergraduate student (and BCaBA!) Lindsey Ives will be starting graduate school in behavior analysis at Florida State University next fall! Congratulations Lindsey!
St. Peter Lab members after graduation
Fall 2017 saw two St. Peter lab members graduate and start new jobs! Apral Foreman received her PhD. Dr. Foreman is now working as a manager at The Shape of Behavior in Texas. Gabrielle Mesches received her Master's degree. Gabrielle will be the Research Coordinator for a lab in Chicago, and owns a private animal-training business. Congratulations to Apral and Gabrielle! We look forward to seeing how you go on to change the world for the better!
Are teachers surviving or improving challenging behavior?
Teachers sometimes struggle to improve challenging behavior in the classroom. Teachers who do not have the necessary skills to improve behavior may begin to just survive that behavior by giving in to students or using long-term implementation of ineffective strategies. Administrators can support teachers by identifying teachers who are just surviving and providing additional supports to those teachers.
Interested administrators can read more about it here.
How do you select an empirically based behavior intervention?
There are lots of factors to consider when selecting an empirically established intervention for school-based challenging behavior. See Claire's slides on this topic from her September 2017 presentation to the WV Council for Exceptional Children here. You can also separately download the flowchart from that presentation, or resources on how to create a culturally responsive behavior system for your school.
Should behavior analysis be "basic" and "applied?"
Claire wonders if the distinction between basic and applied behavior analysis is worth maintaining. You can read more about it in her recent article in The Behavior Analyst.
